VA SERVICE-CONNECTED DISABILITY COMPENSATION

Gunshot and Shrapnel Wounds

Veterans who experienced a gunshot wound or shrapnel injury during service may be eligible for VA disability compensation benefits if it resulted in a muscle injury; a painful scar; or residuals from toxic shrapnel. Muscle injuries are evaluated using the musculoskeletal schedule of ratings for muscle injuries. The ratings vary based on severity of disability, whether the injury is to your dominant or non-dominant side, and the location of the injury. Typically, the evaluations range from 0% to 40%, in 10% increments. If the gunshot wound or shrapnel wound resulted in loss of use of an extremity or both buttocks, the veteran may be entitled to additional special monthly compensation (SMC).
