Happy Birthday, Marines!

On November 10, 1775, the United States Marine Corps was established to augment the naval forces in the Revolutionary War.  The original resolution drafted by the Continental Congress in 1775 called for two battalions (the first and second) of “American Marines” and ordered that “they be considered as part of the number which the continental Army before Boston is ordered to consist of.”

However, with the end of the Revolutionary War, the Marine Corps was actually dissolved – only to be re-established a few years later on July 11, 1798 by Congress in an act to establish the US Marine Corps under the US Constitution.

The history of the Marine Corps is long and storied – full of the freedom-fighting endeavors that have inspired its legacy, and shaped what it means to be a Marine. On November 10th, we say thank you and happy birthday, Devil Dogs!

In celebration of its 248th birthday – the US Marine Corps created and shared this birthday message:

The 248th US Marine Corps Birthday Message

Finally, while Marines around the globe will celebrate by attending annual Marine Corps balls, or celebrate in their own way, the US Marine Corps Central Command recently announced that it would be cancelling its birthday celebration due to “the dynamic and uncertain security environment in the CENTCOM.”  And indeed, we keep the Marines (and all of our service members) currently and recently deployed in the Middle East in our thoughts for a successful mission and safe return home.
