VA SERVICE-CONNECTED DISABILITY COMPENSATION

Back and Neck Ratings

Service-connected back and neck conditions are evaluated under different musculoskeletal system rating formulas, depending on the specific condition. For example, cervical spine and thoracolumbar spine conditions are generally evaluated under the General Rating Formula for Diseases and Injuries of the Spine. If evaluated under the General Rating Formula, a veteran’s back or neck condition can be rated at 0%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, or 100%. The veteran’s rating will be based on the severity of their symptoms, including pain frequency and severity, and the veteran’s range of motion. If the veteran has intervertebral disc syndrome (IVDS), it may be evaluated under the Formula for Rating Intervertebral Disc Syndrome Based on Incapacitating Episodes. This formula provides evaluations at 10%, 20%, 40%, and 60%. A veteran who meets the criteria for a 60% evaluation will have incapacitating episodes lasting at least 6 weeks during the past 12 months.
